London 2012 - students attend selection process for volunteers

Young Games Maker Scheme – London 2012

At the end of November, Westbourne Sports College were shortlisted to participate in a very exciting scheme at next year’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The organisers of the Games are recruiting 2000+ young volunteers in over 250 teams to help make the Games happen.  In our case, the Athletics events at the Olympic Stadium!

On Sunday 11th December, Mr Moore and Mr Ismay accompanied the Westbourne Young Games Maker Team to a half day selection event at Canary Wharf, London.  This event was their first taste of the excitement surrounding the Games and a chance to find out more about London 2012.

The students from Westbourne participated in two team selection activities, designed to assess young volunteers’ communication skills, enthusiasm, discipline, maturity and ability to work as part of a team.  As Team Leader and Secondary Team Leader, Mr Moore and Mr Ismay were also interviewed as part of the selection process.  The team will hear by 23rd December whether they have succeeded in their application.

If successful, each member of the team will need to commit to attend a minimum of three training sessions of around 15 hours total; Orientation Training and Role-Specific Training starting in February 2012 and Venue Training starting in April 2012.  These events will prove invaluable in allowing volunteers to gain experience and understanding of how a large sporting event is staged.  The typical responsibilities of a Young Games Maker will include leading designated athletes to the field of play while carrying a kit box, standing in lane behind the athlete while they prepare for competition and taking the athlete’s kit box to the post-event controlled area.

Congratulations to the 10 students who have been awarded a place on the team: Chelsea Dann 11L, Chenell Clarke 11L,  Reuben Elsom 11L, Ella Flack 11L, Veronique Hack 11N, Kieran Mullan 11T, Danielle Ryder 11K, Samm Turner 11H, Simon Vale 11K and Katie Walden 11W.
