Westbourne's Young Gamesmakers at the Paralympics (3 images)
From Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th September, Stuart Moore, Mark Ismay and Westbourne's team of Young Gamesmakers, have been busy performing their volunteering duties for the Paralympian athletes at the Olympic Stadium. It has been a magnificent opportunity for the staff and students and as Simon Vale said on Radio Suffolk on Thursday morning, 'it has been a once in a lifetime experience'. Stuart said that the roar of the crowd, as people gradually begin to spot the athletes coming out on to the track, travels like a wave around the stadium. It can only be described as mind-blowing, "the sound actually vibrates through every cell of your body".

Another successful year of Sports Arvos - July 2012 (10 images)
During the penultimate week of Summer Term our students took part in a series of Sports Arvos. The energy and competiveness showed by the competing students was outstanding. The theme of Paralympics was brilliantly displayed with students running paired sprints and relays as well as completing more traditional disciplines such as javelin, discus and long jump. The support from tutor groups was spirited and noisy, as all good sports days should be!

History trip to World War 1 Battlefields (11 images)
Year 10 and 11 History students visited sites in Belgium & France on a WW1 Battlefields trip. Day 1 - leaving Westbourne at 6am travelling via the Channel Tunnel we arrived in Ypres by 1pm. We had time for lunch and students stocked up with chocolate before we visited the Cloth Hall which was destroyed during WW1 but has now been rebuilt. Later we visited Sanctuary Wood, a preserved network of trenches to see the conditions soldiers lived in and saw many well preserved artefacts. The coach then took us to Tyne Cot Cemetery the largest British and Commonwealth cemetery in the world, with around 12,000 graves, the names of a further 35,000 men who were never found are inscribed on the walls surrounding the cemetery. After this rather moving visit it was on to Langemarck, the location of the German Cemetery, with the bodies of approx. 40,000 men in a mass grave - a very different atmosphere to that at Tyne Cot. Our day ended at the last post at the Menin Gate in Ypres The last post has been played here every night since 1922. Two of our students laid a wreath on behalf of the college in what was a moving ceremony. Then finally?Bedtime ? for most! Day 2 - We moved on to France and the Battlefields of the Somme; stopping at a site to commemorate John Macrae, who wrote 'In Flanders Fields' and the burial site of the youngest soldier to die at the age of 15. We also visited Beaumont Hammel, a memorial to the soldiers of Newfoundland and saw the trench system they lived in as well as seeing the many craters in no-mans land. Our day ended at Thiepval Memorial that commemorates the 72,000 British soldiers that died on The Somme but whose bodies were never found; the students laid poppies on the graves. Day 3 - Up early for the opening at Disneyland Paris where we had a brilliant time and stayed all day; finally arriving back at Westbourne in the early hours.

Sports Arvo - July 2011 (10 images)
The Sports Arvos have been a radical change to how Sports Day is run at Westbourne and the PE staff were delighted with the effort and enthusiasm shown by the students. It was great to walk around each of the events and see the students thoroughly enjoying the activities whilst maintaining their competitive edge. We wanted to increase the participation rates of the students, hence the Sports Arvos. The events used modern techniques to increase accessibility to traditional PE skills. By working with one year group at a time the PE staff were able to have much greater input and time with each competitor. Students had spent their PE lessons preparing for the events and practicing their skills. By holding all of the events in one afternoon parents were able to see much more of the than they have been able to do before. Many, many thanks to PE and to all the staff who supported their tutor groups, but the biggest thanks to all the students who took part.

Awards Evening - June 2011 (16 images)
On Wednesday 29 we held our annual Awards evening. The evening consists of two events; the Key Stage 3 awards followed by the Key Stage 4 & 5 awards. If you attended the event, and if you did, thank you, you could not have missed the glow of pride from students and parents as we celebrated their achievements. Every year we look to such events to see how we can make them ever better, and this year the developments looked and sounded fantastic. We had quality music and dance performances and speeches from students from each year who helped crystallise the achievements since September 2010. As well as those that had achieved the highest grades in each subject and those that have made the most progress being awarded, the SHINE winners also received awards. Congratulations to all the students who won awards on the evening, and to those that performed ? thank you ? you made the evening very special.

Prom 2011 (12 images)
The Year 11 Prom held at the Cameo Hotel Copdock was an amazing evening. The students, all looking stunning, young men and women alike, arrived in style; Fire Engines, Stretch Limos, Hummers, Cadillacs, Cosworths, buses from a bygone age and a VW camper all turned up to drop off their passengers who were definitely dressed to impress. By 7.30 the dance floor was heaving as party goers wasted no time in getting down to the business of enjoying themselves and strutting their stuff. At 8pm the Buffet was ready and those who could tear themselves away from doing the latest moves on the floor, filled their plates with the fine fayre on offer. Throughout the evening the voting was taking place to name Prom King and Queen and staff were busy scrutinising outfits to vote on who they thought were the best dressed boy and girl. At a little after 10pm, after all the votes had finally been counted (Mr Edwards received one vote for Prom King) Ms Salter made the announcement for best dressed ? the prizes went to Demi Wood and Isaac Kidd. At this point Ms Salter was interrupted by Ms Askham who asked the room to show their appreciation for the effort Ms Salter had gone to in organising the evening; in the midst of clapping and cheering, two students presented with Ms Salter with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates. Ms Salter was visibly moved by the presentation but managed to pull herself together to announce the Prom King as Jackson Wingar and the Prom Queen as April Oliver and with the help of Gill Fry and Hayley Herd, bestowed on the newly announced royalty, their sashes and crowns. Dancing continued until Midnight when another parade of exotic motor vehicles collected their passengers and whisked them off. The Year 11 Prom of 2011 was a resounding success, enjoyed by all who attended.

We did something funny for money! (18 images)
Students and staff took part in various events through the day on Friday 18th March to raise money for Red Nose Day; we baked cakes and decorated them red, tried to guess the name of the teacher from a picture of them as a baby, dressed in fancy dress, wore red, and enjoyed a fantastic talent show. We are very proud to say that we raised a grand total of ?1500.

Jesus Christ Superstar (11 images)
The school production this year was Jesus Christ Superstar the famous musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Running for three nights only from 7th - 9th December there were over 100 students performing in it and music provided by a live band; the biggest production we have ever attempted. The whole production was very well received with some sell out performances. The entire cast had obviously worked very hard and their dedication and commitment was apparent. They all gave truly amazing performances. Well done and thank you to everyone who took part and those who supported and assisted the production.
